Subeditor

Overview

We are looking for a knowledgeable Subeditor who has background knowledge and experience in Subediting and is passionate about news, keenly follows current affairs and is seeking for a job opportunity. The Subeditor will be reporting to the Chief Subeditor. The incumbent will be tasked editing The Star Newspaper.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Chief Subeditor. The incumbent will be tasked editing The Star Newspaper.

Key Responsibilities

• Writes for digital platforms and print
• Edits articles ensuring basic journalism principles (5Ws and H) and pyramid style are followed
• Ensures grammar, spelling and punctuation are correct
• Ensures articles are balanced and libel free (checks with legal officer, senior editors on potential libel)
• Works swiftly, meets page deadlines
• Fills 'holes', adds context
• Calls correspondents as needed for clarification, extra information
• Writes catchy headlines
• Selects appropriate photos and attaches them to articles
• Places stories and photos on page for newspaper, changes style to conform to print style
• Liaises regularly with chief subeditor and training editor to monitor progress and for training sessions.

Education

• •Degree in journalism, mass communications or another related field

• At least 2 years in a similar position in the media or a related field
• Degree in journalism, mass communications or another related field
• Excellent in written English
