Overview
Radio Africa Limited is one of Kenya’s leading media houses with both top national and top niche radio stations in Kenya and we are looking for a well-qualified, knowledgeable, and experienced Group Head of Legal.
Group Head of Legal
Reporting to The Group CEO, the Group Head of Legal will be responsible for managing legal matters in liaison with the appointed lawyers and to handle all basic litigation, guide management on legal matters, respond accordingly to legal correspondence and to administer the company’s contracts with external parties on behalf of Radio Africa Limited and all its subsidiaries.
Responsibilities
Management
- Meet your performance targets and KPIs as set by management annually
- Develop and manage the department’s budget
- Develop quarterly training and development program in line with the overall Company’s strategy for your team and implement to ensure succession planning for the department.
- Manage the Legal department and ensure your team is well trained and motivated.
- Set departmental objectives and manage team performance.
Demand letters and court process
- Ensure demand letters are responded to appropriately and timely.
Legal representation
- Establish a team that is competent to handle legal representation for the company and all its subsidiaries.
Legal registry
- Ensure the case registry is up to date.
- Keep a registry of contracts and keep track of duration and expiry dates always ensuring that all contracts are up to date.
- File yearly newspaper returns at the Books and Newspapers registry
- Keep custody of all legal documents, logbooks, contracts and security documentation for the company.
Reporting
- Generate periodic status report for Management.
- Create compliance dashboard for regulatory and internal priorities and deliverables.
Regulatory compliance
- Ensure annual registration of the companies at Posta Kenya, trademarks and business names as required.
- Ensure compliance to all legislation governing media industry.
- Renew all trading licenses promptly and ensure certification of the company against all required legislation in all areas.
- Manage and complete Communication Authority compliance & requests and liaise with all regulatory authorities.
Employment law and company contracts and policies
- Oversee the drafting of contracts for editorial, management, suppliers, accounting, sales, HR and any other company-related matters.
- Write termination notices.
- Review HR legal matters in liaison with the Group HR Manager.
- Represent Radio Africa Limited and its affiliate brands in employment tribunals.
- Ensure there is a legal representation in all disciplinary hearing and cases.
- Review continually all employment contracts.
- Offer legal guidance on laws that apply to diversity and inclusion
Defamation and broadcast training
- Advise the employees and management on the laws and regulations that relate to broadcasting, journalism, social media and related work regulations.
- Regularly send reading material on defamation and responsible reporting to journalists.
- Organize legal training for all staff
Industry regulation and lobbying
- Represent the company in negotiations and lobbying with media industry regulators in favor of Radio Africa Limited, its affiliate companies and the industry.
- Write opinion and knowledge pieces to position the company as a leader in media practice.
Company representation
- Represent Radio Africa Limited and its affiliated brands at the Media Council Complaints Commission.
- Represent the Group CEO where necessary and when required.
- Assist the management in negotiations with debtors, suppliers and others that may affect any contracts.
- Carry out special projects when called upon by management.
- Advise the CEO on legal matters
- Draft and review all company agreements.
Requirements and qualifications
Additional education
- Bachelor’s in Law. A master’s degree will be an added advantage.
- CPS
- Certificate of regulatory compliance
- Admission to the Bar
- Advocate of the High Court
Experience

- 6 years’ experience post admission to the bar and 3 years in a similar position
- Meticulous individual with a keen eye for detail
- Well versed in legal matters with expertise in media and corporate law.
