Driver ( Turkana)

Overview

The BOMA Project is a fast-growing non-profit in US and a Kenyan NGO that is implementing a high-impact income and savings program for ultra-poor women in the drylands of Africa. We do this through the Rural Entrepreneur Access Project (REAP), an innovative two-year poverty graduation program for women living in extreme poverty in Northern Kenya. BOMA helps pastoral women to start small businesses in their communities so they can earn a sustainable income, pay for food and medical care, send their children to school, survive drought and accumulate savings for long-term family stability.

Responsibilities

Driving Company Vehicle

• Drive vehicle for official BOMA travel and business – staff and partners
• Maintain high standard of ‘client service’/courtesy to both staff and partners while driving
• Ensure punctuality and safety at all times
• Observe road and traffic laws, rules and regulations
• Ensure own driving license is present and valid at all times during official duty
• Ensure no contraband/prohibited goods are in the vehicle
• Ensure no unauthorized personnel drive and/or are carried in the vehicle
• Abide by the authorized driving times; adhere to the laid down departure times for all locations as stipulated
• Maintain the BOMA emergency contact list in the vehicle
• Ensure adherence to the vehicle field checklist before and after departure for all trips and ensure availability of the necessary items in all vehicles; such as first aid box, fire extinguishers, jack, jump starters, life savers etc.

Repairs and Maintenance

• Keep the vehicles clean, tidy and in good working condition at all times
• Ensure vehicle is kept secure at all times – propose and install proper security features
• Conduct regular/day-to-day maintenance checks: check oil, water, battery, brakes, tyres, etc.
• Carry out regular inspection and testing of vehicles; completing preventive maintenance such as, engine tune-ups, oil changes, tire rotation and changes, wheel balancing, replacing filters.
• Carry out proper vehicle repairs, using genuine/manufacturer’s approved spares and specifications
• Prepare and maintain vehicle spare parts inventory
• Ensure availability of adequate, appropriate and functional repair tools and equipment
• Ensure proper functional condition of all vehicles by listening to other driver’s complaints; conducting inspections; repairing engine failures; repairing mechanical and electrical systems malfunctions; replacing parts and components.
• Conduct vehicle inspections before and after every field trip; verify vehicle serviceability by conducting test drives; adjusting controls and systems.
• Where necessary, seek authority for outside repairs where necessary, such as repairs to repairing body damage and major repairs that cannot be undertaken in-house.

Record Keeping and Insurance

• Ensure other drivers maintain proper logs for all trips, fully filled in and signed for every trip with proper details such as trip description, daily mileage, gas consumption, oil changes, etc. a
• Prepare and submit to the supervisor vehicle monitoring reports, including records of vehicle operations, maintenance, expenses, mileage, at end of each month
• Maintain records of vehicle insurance and renewal dates
• Maintain vehicles service and maintenance schedules and make requests for expenditure for the same

Other Administrative Work

• Conduct regular meetings with other Drivers for joint assessment of vehicle operations and conditions
• Assist in the purchase of new vehicles and disposals
• Coordinate field trips and assignment of vehicles based on field terrain, length of field trips and condition of vehicles

Additional education

• Must be a holder of a clean and valid driving license Class ‘ABCE’.
• Possess a mechanics Government Trade Test III is an added advantage

Experience

Additional experience

• A minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible work experience in provision of field driving services.
• Experienced driver with a safe driving record, with hands on experience in driving a variety of four-wheel drive vehicle makes and models in rugged terrain.
• Must have field experience in Northern Kenya
